The Diversity Visa Program

The Diversity Visa Program was created by the Immigration Act of 1990 and signed into law by President George H. W. Bush. The program is also known as the Green Card Lottery and is administered on an annual basis by the US Department of State and conducted under the terms of Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The Department will require that all petitions be submitted to it in an electronic format. Up to 55.000 Green Cards are available via the DV Program each year.

Every year, the Department of State will conduct a random selection of Diversity Immigrant Visa applicants who don't have US relatives, or a workplace in the United States. Anyone who meets the criteria imposed by the US authorities has a chance to be selected for a Green Card. The selection of winners takes place every year.

The Green Card Lottery, also known as the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, receives millions of entries each year from people around the world. Green Card Lottery requirements

When applying for a US visa, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Country of birth

    Currently, eligible countries include nations from Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and South America, but some countries are excluded due to high levels of immigration to the US or other factors.

  • Qualifications

    The DV-Program requires you to have a high school education, or its equivalent, or two years of qualifying work experience as defined under U.S. law.

  • Minimum Age

    The minimum age to apply for a Green Card is 18 years. However applying at the age of 17 is possible if you meet the education or work experience requirements.

  • Language requirements

    There are no language requirements to apply for a Green Card. However we would always recommend to have a sufficient ability to speak, write and understand English if you are planning to become a permanet resident in the United States.

Step by Step guide

If your application has been selected, congratulations! Here are the next steps you will typically need to go through:

  • Step 1
    Notification

    You will receive a notification indicating that your application has been selected. This notification usually occurs between May and September of the year following your application.

  • Step 2
    The DS-260 Form

    You must complete and submit the DS-260 Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration Application form. If you have opted for our Advanced plan, the filing of the DS-260 form will be handled by us. This form collects biographical information about you, including details about your eligibility for the Diversity Visa program.

  • Step 3
    Pay Required Fees

    After submitting the DS-260 form, you will need to pay the required Diversity Visa Lottery fees. These fees typically include the visa application fee and the Diversity Visa Lottery fee. Instructions for payment will be provided during the application process.

  • Step 4
    Undergo Medical Examination

    Before the visa interview, you will need to undergo a medical examination by a designated physician to ensure you meet the health requirements for immigration to the United States.

  • Step 5
    Schedule and Attend Visa Interview

    Once your DS-260 form is processed, you will be scheduled for a visa interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate in your home country. During the interview, a consular officer will review your documents and determine your eligibility for a Diversity Visa. Be sure to bring all required documents to the interview, including your passport, birth certificate, and any other requested documentation.

  • Step 6
    Background Checks and Additional Documentation

    Your background will be thoroughly checked, including criminal and security checks. You may also be asked to provide additional documentation as requested by the consular officer, such as police clearances or marriage certificates if applicable.

  • Step 7
    Visa Issuance

    If the consular officer determines that you are eligible for a Diversity Visa, the visa will be issued and instructions for entry into the United States will be provided.

  • Step 8
    Travel to the United States

    You can now enter the United States as a Lawful Permanent Resident.

After entering the United States, you will receive your Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) by mail at the address you provided during the visa application process.

Passport requirement

In order to participate you must possess a valid and unexpired passport from your country of nationality. If you do not posess a valid passport, you can select this on the registration form. You must submit your passport information within September 2023 so that we can submit your application.

  • The photo must be in color
  • The photo must be 2 x 2 inches in size
  • The photo must be taken in frontof a plain white or off-white background
  • The applicant must face the camera directly, with a neutral expression and eyes open
  • Head coverings are only allowed if they are worn daily for religious reasons, and the applicant's face must be visible.
  • Glasses may be worn, but there must not be any glare on the lenses. The photo must be taken within six months of the application submission.
